I was thinking about this the other day — all the little things I didn’t know about writing that I had to Google to find the answer. So here are some of the answers I found to help you in your story.

Italics

  1. Italics is something that has confused me because I’ve seen them in so many different places for different things. But in Fiction writing they are mostly used for emphasis on words. So, your character is stressing something the reader will definitely know they are drawing everyone’s attention to what they are saying.
  2. Italics can also be used for internal thought in your paragraphs. They don’t need quotation marks or dialogue tags, because they will be your character’s internal thoughts, and your character will have a specific character voice, and your reader will pick up on that. So, no need to add tags or quotations.

Exclamation marks

  1. There’s no need to use more than one exclamation point!!!! I know, sorry to break it to you, but one is enough, trust me! Multiple exclamation points will draw your reader’s attention too much and pull them out of the scene.

Quotation marks

  1. “Quotation marks are placed around dialogue. They indicate the characters are speaking.”
