How to approach Media Consumption as a Writer
Congratulations, you’re a writer, now things are starting to change. You’ve embarked on this wild ride so what now. I always like to start with definitions, give me a leg to stand on. So, we start by understanding what exactly a story is.
I like to define it as “complete organic reactionary entity” as its government name. But it’s so much more than that but this I’ve found to be a very good jumping off point.
Once that “complete organic reactionary entity” or Core to its close friends. Once a little Core enters the world it gets stamped as Medium along with every type of creative expression, movies, tv shows, books, etc.
Medium: the mean, one of the means or channels of general communication, a mode of artistic expression, of communication, an agency or mean of doing something
Latin word: Medius: middle, between, from the middle
This is a little different from the colloquially accepted definition of medium as just what you use to create. We lean towards the ‘mode of artistic expression’ but like paint, written word, film. We associate the word with what is produced from us. What I like about this definition is that it’s addressing that it’s just the channel, looking at the Latin highlights that it’s in between the middle. The middle of what, the in between of what, I’m inclined to believe it’s in between us and our ‘artist expression’ and the world, self, nature, etc. Medium exists as a pathway of communication.
