How to Write a Story that Respects itself
Conflict is the most important thing to understand when writing. It’s the garlic powder in the main course- if it’s not there the food’s plain but if it’s there it brings the whole dish together. It has two components that make it up, Specific characters and events that influence each other. These two elements are usually developed individually, but I argue that they should be thought of as a unit that influences one another infinitely.
I love when Lisa Cron says in her book Story Genius:
What happens in the story is the plot, the surface events of the novel. It is not the same thing as what the story is about. Not by a long shot. The someone is the protagonist, and as we’ll see, everything that happens in the plot will get its mean and emotional weight based on how it affects her — not in general, but in pursuit of a difficult goal. (Cron 17)
It would not make sense for the writer to make a character with a logical brain only for them to do something illogical for the sake of the plot.
It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T, just as the song says,
